Accents and Pronunciation Attitudes of Italian University Students of Languages

In recent years, endorsed by the updated (2018) version of Common European Framework, intelligibility has replaced native-like pronunciation as a primary objective in foreign language teaching. But accent and continue to be central issues for university students languages. This volume presents results an investigation into attitudes some 370 first-year at Ca’ Foscari University Venice, first such study Italy, involving 13 languages, principal ones being English, Spanish, French, German Russian. The survey investigated importance given language, motivation have improve it, possible conflict identity which acquisition ‘foreign’ might incur. Students were invited reflect on quality variability their two languages they studying, ability assess affective aspects linked pronunciation, awareness phonetic features. They also asked opinions about English Lingua Franca (ELF) Italian when spoken with accent. contributions this describe linguistic background respondents, present analyse emerge, verify role independent variables (gender, plurilingualism, enrolment, studied, level proficiency), (in case ELF) report findings follow-up master’s students. result is overall picture likely interest anyone working field teaching who wishes better idea what think pronunciation.
